Blacks in Culinary - Fundraiser Commemorative T-Shirt

On Tuesday evening, August 30 the amazing New York-based artist Patrick-Earl Barnes will be at Zingerman’s Roadhouse unveiling the new wall piece that the Zingerman’s has commissioned.

Entitled “Blacks in Culinary” Patrick-Earl’s new work is an homage to two hundred years of Black cooks and chefs in American history.  While centuries of systemic racism and deep cultural biases have kept the contributions of these skilled culinary craftsmen and women out of the public eye, this new piece pays tribute to the beauty and impact of their work on American cooking.  With the Roadhouse’s nearly two-decade long focus on “really good American food,” the wall piece is a wonderful way to honor this contribution, to showcase it in the context of the food which these unsung heroes of the American culinary heroes are portrayed by Patrick-Earl have played in the U.S. over the centuries.

Zingerman’s co-founder Ari Weinzweig and Patrick-Earl met when the latter was selling his art work on the streets of Soho in New York City.  While Patrick-Earl’s reputation in the art world has grown enormously, he has continued the tradition of selling his work from the streets of Soho.  The Artist in Restaurant will bring this long-standing tradition in which Ari and Patrick-Earl’s now nearly two-decade long friendship got it’s start.  Patrick-Earl will be bringing a range of his pieces with him from New York and they will be available for sale.

Four Magazine says that Patrick-Earl’s painting “captures his version of society in organic, mixed media paintings and creations, all different, daring, and entwined within his poignant theme of deep folk art.”  Another of Patrick-Earl’s powerful and creative custom pieces, entitled "Zingerman’s Roadhouse, LLC,” has been hanging at the Roadhouse since the winter of 2020.

Of his work, Patrick-Earl says, Art is a way to spread higher consciousness and inspire individuals to think. For the last 25 years, this has been part of my daily purpose to show people how I think. I am a deep folk artist who is driven to succeed in his artistic quest.”

Part of the proceeds will go to the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County.  The Museum, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this coming March, is one of the little known cultural jewels of the community.  Last year the Museum hosted an exhibit entitled “Where Art Meets History.”  “Artist in Restaurant” and the release of “Blacks in Culinary” builds on that good work.
